Great Britain: Fact file
Form guide
Great Britain's women's and men's sevens teams both finished eighth after seven rounds of the regular SVNS season to guarantee their core team status for 2025. The men's side struggled early on in the season but rallied to finish far stronger with a silver medal in Los Angeles and bronze in Singapore. They also finished eighth at the season-ending Grand Final in Madrid and still need to qualify for Paris 2024 through the World Rugby Sevens Repechage in Monaco.
The women's team only had one standout performance, a third-place finish in Perth in January, and they also finished the stand-alone Madrid event in eighth place.
Star dust
Sevens commentator and reporter Rob Vickerman says: "Look out for Ellie Kildunne who has been drafted into the sevens squad after picking up the Women’s Six Nation’s Player of the Championship award."
Road to Paris 2024
Having finished outside the top four in the World Rugby Sevens Series 2023, Great Britain's women booked their place at the European Games held at Henryk Reyman’s Municipal Stadium in Kraków, Poland. They went unbeaten throughout and sealed their place with a 33-0 victory over host nation Poland in the final. Team GB's men are yet to qualify and have one final chance at the repechage tournament in Monaco.Â
Previous Olympics
Great Britain's men's and women's teams both competed at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 (played in 2021), with the sole medal coming from the men who captured silver in 2016.
After tight knockout wins against Argentina and South Africa, Team GB were no match for Fiji in the final (43-7) and had to settle for silver. The women's team lost their bronze medal match against Canada, 33-10.
In Tokyo both teams endured the agony of finishing fourth, losing their bronze medal matches. The men's side lost out 17-12 to Argentina and the women lost to Fiji 21-12. Â
