Having finished the regular SVNS season in fifth place after seven events, Canada's women will take plenty of confidence from the season-ending Grand Final in Madrid. In the pool stage they ended New Zealand’s 27-match winning streak against them with a 26-17 win and were again competitive against the same opposition as they lost out in the bronze medal match.

Star dust

Sevens commentator and reporter Rob Vickerman says: "In every Olympic cycle all eyes are on the cross-over athletes who choose to transfer their skills and athleticism to rugby sevens from other sports. Krissy Scurfield is a case in point: she has brought the energy and physicality of her ice hockey background to Canada's team to the point where she must now be one of the first names on the coach's list."

Road to Paris 2024

Canada's women confirmed their participation at Paris 2024 by winning the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens 2023 at the Starlight Stadium in Langford. Following three pool stage wins and a 41-7 victory over St Lucia in the semi-final, they took no chances with a comprehensive 53-0 victory against Mexico in the final. In all, they scored 288 points and conceded only seven.

Previous Olympics

Canada's women became the first rugby sevens team to win an Olympic medal by beating Great Britain 33-10 to claim bronze at Rio 2016. Having beaten France in the quarter-finals, they lost to eventual champions Australia in the semi-finals before recovering to win their last match. Four years on they finished third in their pool and did not qualify for the quarter-finals. 

Canada's men did not qualify for the first rugby sevens Olympic showing in Rio but competed in Tokyo where they lost to eventual silver medal winners New Zealand in the quarter-finals, 21-10.
