Attracting and Retaining Volunteers
Any club, team or association has a team or teams that play on the field and a team of volunteers who organise the activity off the field. Both are obviously needed for a successful club but as the number of players increases, the more organisation, planning and leadership will be needed.
The team off the field will need individuals possessing certain skills. These include financial skills to structure the finances of the club, communication and marketing skills to organise the players and drive sales, sponsorship and marketing efforts around matches but also for events, selling sponsorship and engaging the community.
The challenges that all clubs have is that the volunteers they attract have limited time and very often don’t have the experience or skills to match these requirements.
The following sections about attracting and retaining volunteers are developed in detail in the PDFs available for download below:
- Establish mutual benefits: the club's needs and the reasons for volunteers to help the club
- Sell the volunteer opportunity through multiple channels
- Create clarity in volunteer roles to make them feel valued and supported
