This weekend's 16th team at the Emirates Airline Glasgow Sevens is Japan after they secured their place amongst the elite for next season's HSBC Sevens World Series.

Japan qualified as a core side by beating Italy in the final of the World Series qualifier in Hong Kong in March and can now look forward to competing at all nine rounds in the Olympic qualifying season.

Their first reward, however, is to travel to the final two rounds of this Series as the non-core side in Glasgow and London, events from which they will be looking to learn about the sides they will face next year.

"For the team, qualifying as a core side meant a huge amount," said Lomano Lemeki, who has risen to fame in the Japanese setup this year.

"We have been working hard to get here, but now we can't slack off. We have two tournaments this week and next and we want to perform like we did in Tokyo and Hong Kong.

"We have put more pressure on ourselves. We know we will be competing full time next year, against these sides, so we want to see where are at compared to them now and leading into next season."

The victory in Hong Kong, where Japan won all six of their matches including a semi final win over Russia and quarter final defeat of Tunisia, came off the back of their home tournament in Tokyo where they recorded a record-breaking win over Samoa and also drew with Argentina.

"In the country Sevens has become a big success," added Lemeki. "With the U20s doing well too and getting promotion (to the JWC), Rugby is getting really big at the moment.

"There is now way more media. After we won in Hong Kong, the media was already waiting in the airport for us which never normally happens. It is getting bigger, especially now they know we can compete against the bigger teams.

"At that point we weren't in the World Series and to have that first-ever win against one of the best sides on the Series Samoa, it does help a lot and it gives us confidence and shows the boys if we have done it before we can do it again."

The infamous diver....

It wasn't all smiles for Japan in Hong Kong, however, with Lemeki remembering the "infamous diver" Kosuke Hashino at the end of the Italy match....

"Everyone has been giving him stick, and putting that photo on team i-Pads and team computers," joked Lemeki.

"He has become world famous but perhaps not for the reason he wanted. He takes it well though."

Hashino is due to join up with the Japan squad this weekend.
