Whilst New Zealand will be presented with the 2010/11 HSBC Sevens World Series title this weekend in Murrayfield, South Africa's victory over Fiji in the Cup final at Twickenham has left the race for second place wide open.

Heading into the 2011 Emirates Airline Edinburgh Sevens there are just 11 points separating England (121), South Africa (116), Samoa (112) and Fiji (110) in the current standings.

But with the momentum from their second Cup title this season firmly in their favour, South Africa's coach is hoping his side can finish the season on a high at Murrayfield.

"Last week was a good result for us, especially after beating a quality Fijian side," said Paul Treu.

"For us it is important to keep the momentum going. We would like to finish second in the standings as we know this is important going into the new season. I think we can finish second but we can also finish fifth, it is up to the players, it is not going to be easy.

"But we are just going to focus on the things that are important to us as a team and I think that is about how we are going to finish the season. You are only as good as your last minute when it comes to Sevens and we would like to finish on a high. The players have set some good targets for themselves this week and if they can stick to that and commit to their roles and responsibilities then our goal is achievable."

This season New Zealand have won four of the seven Cup titles on offer, South Africa two and England one, the opening tournament of the season in Dubai.

Defending champions Samoa have failed to lift a Cup title this season but have consistently scored 12 or more points at each tournament, whilst Fiji have played in two Cup finals ensuring there is still plenty to play for in the final leg.

"I think that is the biggest pressure now [finishing second]. We thought after last week there wouldn't be much pressure but there are four teams vying for second and third spot and it will all be up for grabs this weekend," said Samoa coach Stephen Betham.

But for Treu, in the knowledge that the Springbok Sevens have only managed to win back-to-back tournaments once before, if they do achieve their goal of winning Murrayfield for the first time this team will create their own legacy at the 100th event in the World Series.

"The first time we won a double tournament was way back in 2008, and that was with a quality team with Gio Aplon who became a Springbok, Robert Ebersohn, Mzwandile Stick they were all quality players, but it is very difficult for any team to win two in a row," added the South Africa coach.

"We had six new players who played their first London Sevens and will be doing the same here in Scotland, but for these guys, mostly youngsters, it is quite a big ask to hopefully become only the second South African team to achieve the double.

"But they have an opportunity to create their own legacy for themselves, and I think that is something to really play for."

Treu's other success this season came in Las Vegas at the 2011 USA Sevens, the week after the NZI Sevens in Wellington where they lost in the Plate final.

In fact, this season South Africa have always performed better in the second tournament - at home in South Africa after Dubai, in Australia following Hong Kong and in USA the week after Wellington.

They can't do better than winning the Cup this time in Edinburgh, but a further success will add to an already impressive season for the Springbok Sevens.

"We have achieved every single target and goal we have set for ourselves as a team this season," added Treu.

"We wanted to expose new players, we signed five schoolboy. Three have played and we have given them finals and they have played well. I think that is the most important thing for us, we want to keep growing as a team.

"In terms of how we finish the season and how we have performed in the last couple of tournaments that is what the South African public would like to see. I am really happy with how we are growing as a team and the development of the individual players, so I think it is something to look forward to this weekend, whether they can step it up, and also something to look forward to next season as well.
