Former Wales Sevens and Age grade coach Dai Rees has joined the Hong
Kong Rugby Football Union as the new head coach of the country's
national squads.
Rees has been Assistant Coach of Welsh regional side Newport Gwent Dragons for the past fours years, during which time he has also fulfilled key coaching roles with the country's Under 19, Under 20, Under 21 and Sevens teams.
"I am delighted and excited to accept the position of Head Coach with the HKRFU," Rees said.
"I am looking forward immensely to working with all the players, coaches and clubs in the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union to enhance and build on the current developments and structures.
“I am enthused that there is a strong U14, U16 and U18 National playing base, with the U20s National team focused on qualification for the 2009 World Trophy after narrowly missing out this year. This along with the recent qualification of the Senior Sevens squad for the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai 2009 highlights the future potential and prospects within Hong Kong Rugby.”
Rees began coaching in 1995 after a playing career which peaked with appearances for Wales B in 1986 and 1989. He played for Swansea, Newbridge, Newport and Crosskeys at senior club level in Wales.
Exciting times for Hong Kong
"Hong Kong and Asian rugby has entered a very exciting development phase over the past 12 months with the inception of the Asian 5 Nations championships and an ever growing playing base within the Hong Kong community. I am excited to be entering this environment and believe we can move Hong Kong rugby forward," said Rees.
HKRFU head of performance Ivan Torpey said he was looking forward to working with Rees.
"Dai’s coaching record greatly impressed the selection panel. He has some exceptional experience, having proven himself at both national and professional club level and I am confident that he can take our national squad programmes forward," Torpey said.
Rees’ role will see him oversee all aspects, national youth squads and development programmes, along with the David S Davis Academy, in addition to his position as the head coach of the senior national team.
Rodney McIntosh will continue in his current role as head coach of the senior Sevens team.
