Tall, skilful and powerful Edgar Mobbs was a fearsome sight with the ball in hand either at centre or on the wing. He made a try-scoring international debut against the 1908-09 Wallabies, and went on to win seven caps for England. He captained his country against France in the first ever Five Nations Championship and played 11 times for the Barbarians, six times as captain.

Bedford-educated Mobbs was also captain of his hometown club Northampton, for whom he scored a record 177 tries, and East Midlands County. Before he retired from the game in 1913, Mobbs enjoyed a spell in France where he became a firm fans’ favourite at Toulouse.

Having risen to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel during World War I, Mobbs was killed in action at Passchendaele in July 1917. His body was never recovered.  A memorial match in his name was first staged in 1921 and is still played to this day.
