Ieuan Evans’ ability to conjure something out of nothing with his razor-sharp side-step, searing pace and rugby nous marked him out as a standout player for Wales and the British and Irish Lions. 

Evans played for Wales 72 times, 28 as captain, and scored 33 tries – a tally only bettered by Shane Williams and Gareth Thomas – in an international career spanning 11 years from 1987-98.

While known for scoring fine solo tries, such as the weaving run to the line against Scotland in the 1988 Five Nations, Evans’ most famous score was undoubtedly the close-range effort in 1989 when he pounced on a loose pass from David Campese on his own goal line to clinch a series win for the Lions against Australia.

Fittingly, his international swansong came at Stradey Park, where he played for Llanelli for many years before joining Bath and winning the Heineken Cup in his first season.
