Auckland legend Jones won global acclaim for the way he revolutionised the openside position with his physical prowess, superior fitness and instinctive play.

After a solitary cap for Samoa, Jones switched allegiance to New Zealand in time for the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987. In the opening match against Italy, his debut, Jones became the first player to score a try. He scored again in the final as France were beaten 29-9.

Jones also played at RWC 1991 but his refusal to play on Sundays on religious grounds restricted him to three appearances. For that reason, he was not considered for RWC 1995. The following year though, operating at number six, he helped New Zealand win the inaugural Tri-Nations title.

Had it not been for injuries and his faith, Jones would have won far more than 55 All Blacks caps. He scored 13 tries. On his retirement, he coached Samoa at two Rugby World Cups.
