When Wallaby great Michael Lynagh suffered a serious stroke in April 2012 the outpouring of emotion from the rugby public told you all you needed to know about his standing in the game.

Now a popular TV pundit, Lynagh had a lengthy playing career – he was an integral part of Australia's Grand Slam-winning tour of Britain and Ireland in 1984 and finally retired from international rugby in 1995 as the then leading points-scorer, with 911, in test history.

Of the fly-half’s 17 test tries, the most memorable was probably the one he scored against Ireland in the dying stages of the Rugby World Cup 1991 quarter-final which kept the Wallabies’ dreams of lifting the Webb Ellis Cup alive.

In 1993, Lynagh took over the captaincy of the Wallabies and led them masterfully for the next two years.
