Gavin Hastings rarely put a foot wrong at full-back in a nine-year international career that saw him win 61 caps for Scotland, 20 as captain, and six for the British and Irish Lions, whom he led in 1993. He scored 733 points in all tests.

After leading Cambridge University to victory in the 1985 Varsity Match Hastings was handed his Scotland debut the following year. He kicked a then test record of six penalties as France were beaten 18-17.

While known for his outstanding kicking, Hastings was also a fine attacking full-back. He gave key impetus to the move that led to Tony Stanger’s Grand Slam-sealing try against England in 1990, and his try helped Scotland record a famous win over France in Paris in the 1995 Five Nations.

Often selected alongside younger brother Scott, Hastings played in three Rugby World Cups, scoring 227 points in 13 matches, a record that was eventually broken by Jonny Wilkinson.
