Australia’s most-capped captain held the world record for test appearances until Bran O’Driscoll passed his tally of 139 caps in March 2014.

Having made his debut against Italy in 1994, the Zambia-born scrum-half hit the headlines a few months later when his superb cover tackle on Jeff Wilson – voted the greatest Wallaby moment ever – denied the All Blacks victory in a thrilling Bledisloe Cup clash in Sydney.

Twice a Super Rugby winner with the ACT Brumbies, Gregan appeared in the first of his four Rugby World Cups in 1995, before playing a starring role at RWC 1999 under John Eales’ captaincy and then leading the team to the 2003 final. 

Gregan captained Australia in 59 tests, including the 2-1 series win over the 2001 British and Irish Lions, before retiring after RWC 2007. He was appointed to the Order of Australia in 2004.
