Former Scotland captain Ian McGeechan toured with the British and Irish Lions seven times as a player and coach to earn the nickname ‘The Lion King’.

The Headingley stalwart won 32 Scotland caps and eight for the Lions, appearing in all four tests on the triumphant 1974 tour to South Africa and again in New Zealand and Fiji in 1977. McGeechan’s Scotland career was split between centre and fly-half and lasted from 1972-79. 

His coaching CV is hard to beat with series wins for the Lions against Australia in 1989 and South Africa in 1997, completing a notable player-coach double. With Scotland he achieved the Grand Glam in 1990 and a year later led them to the Rugby World Cup semi-final and fourth place – their best finish.

At club level, he oversaw a halcyon period for Wasps post-RWC 2003, when they became English and European champions. 

He was knighted in 2010 for his services to rugby.
